BABY ONIES 




Materials:
J hook Newborn-3MO size, 
3 oz worsted or sport weight yarn, 
5 small buttons. 
Shell: (dc, ch1, dc) in indicated stitch. 
(Row numbers are listed in detail at the end of each row)
Chain 41

Row 1: DC in 3rd ch from hook (counts as first dc now and throughout) and in the next 4 st. Shell in next st, dc in next 7 st, shell in next st, dc in next 11 st, shell in next st,
dc in next 7 st, shell in next st, dc in last 5 st. 
Rows 2-5: Ch 2, turn. Dc to ch-1 sp, shell in ch-1 sp, Dc across to next ch-1 sp, shell in ch-1 sp, dc across to next ch-1 sp, shell in ch-1 sp, dc across to next ch-1 sp shell in ch-1 sp, dc in remaining sp.  (rows 2  3  4  5 )
Row 6: Ch 2, turn. Dc to first ch-1 sp, fold garment in thirds and connect first and second ch-1 spaces with a dc. Dc across to next ch-1 sp, fold Garment in thirds again,
connect 3rd and 4th ch-1 spaces with a dc. Dc across to end. 
Rows 7-10: Ch 2, turn. DC in each DC across. Turn at the end of Row 10 but DO NOT CH 2.

Row 11: Sl st in first 11 st, ch 2 DO NOT TURN. Dc in next 20 st leaving last 11 st unworked. 
(Correction sent by reader Dana Jan 3, 2007) Row 11 should read : sl st in first 14 st, ch2 do not turn crochet in next  20 st leaving last 14 st unworked)
Rows 12-13: Ch 2, turn. Dc in next 20 St. Turn. DO NOT CH 2 after Row 13.  (rows 12  13 )
Rows 14-19: Slip St in first st, dc in each dc across to last dc. Leave last Dc unworked.

Rows 20-25: Ch 2, turn, 2 Dc in first dc, Dc in each dc across to last dc, 2 dc in last st. 
(rows 20  21  22  23  24  25)
Rows 26-28: Ch 2, turn. Dc in each Dc across. 
(rows 26  27  28)
Row 29: Ch 1, turn, Sc in corner and in ea end row around whole garment, 2 Sc in ea corner, continue around to beginning point, fasten off.
Button Band: With right side facing, attach yarn at right front neck and work 2 rows Sc across right front edge, fasten off.
Buttonhole Band: With right side facing, attach yarn at left front  bottom corner and work 1 row Sc across lefy front edge to neck; turn
Buttonhole Row: Ch 1, Sc in first Sc (Ch 2, skip 1 Sc, Sc in next Sc), repeat to end, Sc in remaing Sc to end of bottom edge, turn.
Next Row: Ch1, (Sc in ea Sc to one Sc before Ch 2 sp, skip sc before sp, 2 Sc in sp), repeat to top, 2 Sc in last Sc; now Sc in ea around neck edge, 2 Sc in corner, Sc
across Button Band to bottom edge, fasten off.
Finishing: Sew buttons to match buttonholes, sew one button on ea side of bottom front (for front diaper flap)
